About Iridium

Iridium is the only provider of truly global satellite voice and data communications solutions with complete coverage of the entire Earth including oceans, airways and even Polar Regions. Iridium delivers reliable, secure, real-time, mission-critical communications services to and from areas where landlines and terrestrial-based wireless services are either unavailable or unreliable.
A little known fact is that the current model 9555 Iridium satellite telephone and the Iridium satellite service allows your friends or colleagues to send free short messages to your phone; which you can receive at no charge within minutes if your phone is on or else when you next turn it on and register with the Iridium network.

How To Call An Iridium SatPhone
Your Iridium phone has a 12-digit voice number, beginning with +8816 (Iridium's international country code which, like all country codes, must be prefixed with a + or 00. Although it is free for the receiver, a call directly from a NZ landline or mobile to an Iridium phone can be quite expensive for the caller. To avoid this cost, there is a system called two stage dialling. It involves calling a routing service in the USA (+1 480 768 2500) and entering the Iridium phone number you wish to contact. The caller will pay their standard rate for a toll call to the USA, and the Iridium phone holder will pay for the satellite portion of the call, much like global roaming. For exact rates charged to the caller in either of these scenarios, you will need to ask your landline or mobile provider. For technical information or assistance with your Iridium phone, call us on 0800 SATCOM or contact us on line.
Iridium Data Services
With a real data rate of 2400 bps, Iridium usually is not the best choice for customers intending to transmit large data files. By comparison, Inmarsat BGAN offers data speeds up to 492,000 bps; however, if you have a light usage application such as sending and receiving a few text-based emails, Iridium may be sufficient for your data application. Also, many customers choose Iridium because they do not want to carry heavier Inmarsat terminals or because they are travelling in an area not covered by Inmarsat or other satellite networks.
How Iridium Works
The Iridium service is ideally suited for industries such as maritime, aviation, government, military, emergency, humanitarian services, mining, forestry, oil and gas, heavy equipment, transportation and utilities. Iridium offers its service to mobile users through a small portable handset (To find out which Iridium handset best suits your needs, simply call us on 0800 SATCOM). There are several docking systems for your car, boat or plane, as well as systems designed for permanent indoors or below decks use in fixed site or marine applications. Wrights offer a variety of external antennas, antenna cables, and accessories such as data kits, watertight cases, and secure communications equipment for your Iridium phone. Click below to see a short video.

The Iridium System uses a constellation of Low Earth Orbit
satellites in polar orbits about 485 miles above the earth's surface. The satellites orbit once every 100 minutes. Iridium mobile phones use omni directional antennas. A user merely needs to have line of site between his or her Iridium antenna and one of the LEO satellites. A call from the Iridium mobile phone on the ground is routed through a chain of one or more Iridium satellites until it can be routed to an Iridium gateway or ground station. From the gateway, voice calls are routed through the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and on to their final destination. The ability to route calls through multiple satellites is a key reason why Iridium can offer total global coverage without maintaining a large number of expensive ground stations. No matter how remote your location, including mid ocean and polar regions, Iridium coverage is available. Iridium voluntarily blocks service to any country that does not want Iridium service in their territory. Currently, there are only a few countries that have voluntarily opted out of Iridium service.

Iridium Axcesspoint
This device lets you create a WiFi hotspot up to 150 feet in range with the data feed from an Iridium Extreme (9575) or an Iridium 9555 handheld satellite phone.
At only 3.5 oz and under 3x5 inches, the Iridium AxcessPoint WiFi device is small and light enough to take anywhere. Need email and the web in a small package? With only an Iridium Extreme (or 9555) handheld phone, Iridium AxcessPoint WiFi device and your iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone, PC or Mac you can do it all, from anywhere in the world.
The raw uncompressed data rate of Iridium service when using a handset is around 2.4 kbps, but using the complimentary Iridium AxcessPoint Mail & Web service with Mac, Windows or iOS devices, accelerates data transfers: up to 15-20 times faster for email, and 3-5 times faster for web browsing. This gives an excellent email experience, and fast enough browsing for light browsing of mobile web sites (e.g.: don't expect video or music streaming, but great for news and other text based sites). Android devices will also benefit from the web acceleration with Iridium AxcessPoint Mail & Web, but not email acceleration.
The AxcessPoint Wi-Fi device eliminates the problems associated with most USB cables, and boasts a firewall that eliminates all unnecessary computer traffic, giving you access to the maximum throughput of your Iridium data service.

Smartlink
ICS have introduced a new Iconics Smart-Link unit, as pictured above, to accommodate the expansive developments requested by our rapidly growing customer base. This enables VHF and UHF users around the world to talk to each other across a dedicated audio link via the internet. Remote locations can use either BGAN or RBGAN for the link or those users fortunate enough to operate within a mature telecoms infrastructure have the benefit of local internet or broadband. It is now possible to monitor and interact with hand-held portable radios anywhere in the world! This is the culmination of two years research and development and is a unique product developed specifically for ICS and our customers. If you haven't already seen this, call us now to book your demonstration. More...

The basic mode of operation users a second radio called the "slave" radio
This radio is programmed on the same channel as your existing system
All radio traffic on your channel will now be received on the "slave" radio
The audio is extracted from the radio and is processed and digitised by the ICONICS interface module via the secure radio gateway server
The encoded and security tagged audio packets are routed to their destination using various secure encryption techniques
A the destination end the radio audio traffic is decoded by either client software or another ICONICS interface module and presented as the original audio
Our client software allows a PC user to communicate using standard multimedia devices such as desk microphone and speakers
The client software version allows a PC user to have communications with any radio group and any other software client in real time
The ICONICS system allows the use of total radio communications and also software client based PC to radio
The supplied radio can also be programmed to operate on a VHF or UHF repeater to give even wider area coverage and will integrate into your existing radio network
ICONICS is very flexible and can be configured to work with all types of radio systems allowing you to expand your existing infrastructure worldwide
